# Trait Documentation

Natowls are characterized by a combination of core and dynamic traits determined by the hash of the block number passed into the [UNAT logic inscription](https://ord.io/ed316113d594e7bd7f4b9189d8b10581a9b061adaea787abfff30ca594ee5918i0) by the mint inscription, which represents the owl's unique DNA.&#x20;

Core traits, such as body parts (e.g., beak, chest) and environmental elements (e.g., background, tree) and the moon phases, are fixed and remain present to the extent relevant in the view. They may, however, be covered by dynamic traits or cut out of the PFP view. The visible phase of the moon tracks the phase of the actual moon. These traits are mapped as coordinate sets on a 30x30 pixel grid within the owl.json inscription.\
\
Each of the core traits has an index number that is consistent in the collection deploy inscription which has the sets of potential colors for a given trait and the Owl.json inscription which holds the coordinates. The digit in the owl's DNA sequence corresponding to the index number of a core trait determines the color of the trait. For example, the beak has an index of 16. So the value of the 17th digit in the owl's DNA sequence is the index of the beak color in the 17th color set in collection deploy inscription. \
\
Dynamic traits include overlay and personality traits. The overlay traits include apparel (e.g., hats, outfits), accessories (e.g., sword, gloves), and environment (e.g., sky, tree branch). The number present, what they are, and when they appear is determined by the owl's unique DNA sequence. The first digit of the owl's DNA sequence is used to determine whether the default view is the PFP or the contextual view. The average of the first and second digit of the owl's DNA sequence determines the number of overlay traits and the number of days to hatch, as shown in the table below.&#x20;

<table><thead><tr><th width="130"># of Traits</th><th>Average value</th><th>Days to hatch</th><th>Percent</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>0</td><td>&#x3C;= 0.5</td><td>0</td><td>3</td></tr><tr><td>1</td><td>>0.5 &#x26; &#x3C;= 2</td><td>1</td><td>12</td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>>2 &#x26; &#x3C;= 5</td><td>2</td><td>49</td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>>5 &#x26; &#x3C;=8.5</td><td>3</td><td>35</td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td>>8.5</td><td>4</td><td>1</td></tr></tbody></table>

The expression of specific overlay traits depends on the owl's DNA, the appearance rate of the trait category, and the relative percentage within the category.&#x20;

The table below shows the category appearance rates. Categories with a zero category appearance rate (e.g., the sky overlays) express based on the time of day, day of week, and/or day of year.  &#x20;

The table below shows overlay traits, their category, and their relative likelihood within the category. Traits with a zero relative percentage express based on time of day and/or the owl's DNA sequence. Many of the overlay traits change colors either within a set of color or randomly.

\*These were the observed percentages from a snapshot on the evening of March 17th, 2024. These numbers are subject to change as each day some owls go naked, but we generally expect the numbers to be relatively similar. \
\
The personality traits express based on specific values in the owl's DNA sequence, the time of day, and the day of the week. As shown in the table, each personality trait has a corresponding position in the DNA sequence. Generally, if the value is 8 or 9, the trai is considered to have full expression.&#x20;
