About Natowls
Intro
Natowls is the first dynamic art collection created from Digital Matter. Each Natowl has unique traits, and is generated autonomously through the Bitcoin blockchain.
The genesis Natowl was inscribed on 3/12/2024, and the project was shared publicly that same day. On launch, it became the first utilization of the BRC333 protocol with the Unique Non-Arbitrary Token (UNAT) standard to create a dynamic ordinal collection.
Dynamic ordinals change over time. In fact, with the Natowl UNAT inscription, you can view what a UNAT will look like at any point in the future. Thus, natowls are not simply a PFP but a dynamic stream of PFPs that may express differently in suble ways every time you view them, while maintainng their unique integral character. Natowls supply
Natowls supply is determined based on the occurrence of the pattern "0[a-f]0" in the hexadecimal bits field of Bitcoin's block data. the pattern "0[a-f]0" is "0a0", "0b0", "0c0", "0d0", "0e0", or "0f0" Each Natowl is associated with a specific Bitcoin block, and Natowls only exist for blocks containing the pattern "0[a-f]0" (see table below).
At the moment, the supply of natowls is 10,080. But the Natowls supply is dynamic because new Bitcoin blocks are continuously being introduced. Bitcoin's bits field is associated with mining difficulty. Mining difficulty adjusts every 2016 blocks (approximately every two weeks). Any difficulty period corresponding to the occurence of the pattern "0[a-f]0" will produce a new set of 2016 Natowls.
Prior to the deployment of Natowls, there were 5 difficulty periods in Bitcoin's history that contained the pattern 0[a-f]0. The next set of 2016 Natowls may be introduced next month, next year, in 10 years, in 100 years, or never.
Trait Selection
Each Natowl is a one-of-one dynamic artwork with a unique set of core and dynamic traits. The core traits define the colors of the owl, the tree, and the default background. They do not change. The core traits are selected using a hash of Bitcoin's block height field, which is the DNA of the natowl. Each character position in the natowl's DNA corresponds to a part of the owl (e.g., the 17th character in the DNA is for the beak) and its value defines the color. The two types of dynamic traits are bonus and personality traits. Bonus traits define the apparel and environment of the natowl. These traits can express always or just certain times, and may appear in different colors or positions. Personality traits determine how the natowl and its environment interact with time. These include whether the owl goes to sleep often or is very talkative. Each natowl has between 0-4 bonus traits. The first character in the hash determines how many bonus traits the natowl receives and the sequence of characters determines which bonus traits the natowl receives. Personality traits are determined by the value of specific character positions in the hash. E.g., the 13th character of the hash determines whether the natowl is likely to close its eyes and sleep frequently.
Because only a subset of block heights are valid instances of Natowls, the rarity of a given trait is a function of both the block field, as well as the distribution of Natowls supply across blocks.
Dynamic Rarity
Because Natowls supply and traits are dynamic, the rarity of a given trait is also subject to change. A given trait may increase or decrease in its rarity relative to other traits as new block heights are introduced.
Why Natowls
Natowls was created to explore the possibilities for dynamic art creation through Digital Matter, based on the core belief that dynamic ordinals are the future. Dynamic collections such as Owlinals, Runedragons, and Natowls signal a shift from today's static jpeg NFTs to artifacts that come into our lives. Dynamic collections are like interactive billboards on Bitcoin, and ordinals are destined to become decentralized, content-driven apps, forever accessible to everyone.
